Settle in for a story...

Remember the last 'story' that made an impact on you. Was it a friend sharing gossip, or someone being encouraging? What made it memorable? Was it fast and intense, or slow and reflective. How we say things can make all the difference on how it's received by others, both in what is said and the tone that is used.

How do you tell a story?

"People may not remember what you said but they will remember how you made them feel"

Stories are how we share things and maintain strong connections with others

We all have moments when what we intended in our conversation landed completely differently with the other person and they may have misunderstood what we meant.  In these moments, the best thing to do, is to reframe what we were saying and say it in another way so that the person we are talking to really understands what we meant.  Often it is not only WHAT we say but HOW we say it that makes all the difference.

Let me give you an example. Imagine you have shared something personal with a friend and then discover they have told someone else about it.  You could ask ‘Why did you do that?’ or you may ask ‘please help me to understand why you shared this with them. Can you see how each would get a different response?

Try this....

1. Think of a recent time when you said something and received a bad reaction.

2. Write it down

3. Now think of 3 ways of saying it better (remember to look at both what you said and how you said it).

3. What did you learn, and what could you do differently now?

Take the test...

Do you want to understand your current level of skill?
